World War II is the single most important event in modern history.
It was during this great war that ordinary men and women mustered courage and performed feats of heroism – crouched in muddy foxholes, soaring on board B-17s, or splashing through cold surf on Normandy beach. Bravery, however, was not only wrought in combat.
Vast quantities of courage and resolve were exhibited by the occupants of Nazi death camps. Strength radiated from the thousands of United States women who threw down aprons and became skilled at driving rivets into Sherman tanks. And the doggedness displayed by the leaders of Western democracies was, and still is, commendable.
The purpose of this Web site is to explore many of the facets of World War II – from the D-Day invasion in France to the Battle of Midway in the Pacific, from Sir Winston Churchill’s fiery orations to Adolf Hitler’s unquenchable thirst for European domination, and from Japan’s ruthless, imperial leadership to the thousands of U.S. women who broke sex barriers to join the armed forces. Each Web page was designed and built entirely by World History students at Buras High School. The following are the World War II topics that these students investigated.
